The first thing I do is clean the section of the shoe I'm going to paint with low odor mineral spirits. Doing this removes any oils and dirt that may be on the leather and it also opens the pores so the paint sticks better. Some people use window cleaner with ammonia but I feel the mineral spirits works better. |

Next I tape off all the areas I don't want overspray to get on. I now use my black and paint the outline of my name. When I'm done with the black I use a hair dryer to dry the paint before I go on to the next step. |
Now I take my Carribean blue and start at the top of the letters and fill it in to about half way down. Then I take my Pthalo blue and start at the bottom of the letters and fade it upwards into the Carribean blue. I also use the Pthalo blue to add a border around the name and to add a few star bursts around the name. Now I grab my Violet and lightly add some paint to the very bottom of the name to make it even darker. Again, between colors I used my hair dryer to dry the paint. |
Now I go in with my white and add my high lights. I make my light source come from the upper right, so I add my high lights to the top right of my letters. I also add some high lights to the star bursts. All the airbrushing is finished so I use my hair dryer, one last time to make sure all the paint is completely dry. To seal the work I spray 2 light coats of Krylon Matte finish clear coat over the work. I use the Matte so it doesn't get to shiney. |
I hope this gives you an idea how to airbrush sneakers. If done right and if the customer takes care of them, they should hold up for a long time. Airbrushes used were Badger Anthems, Vega2000, Omni3000, and Iwata Eclipse. Paint used was all Createx except for Aqua Flow Black and White. |
