Sam, a few years back I owned a nautical decor shop, and alot of the stuff was brass. As you know brass will tarnish rather quickly. I use to use clear high glosss lacquer to prevent the tarnish. This had a few draw backs, the first being that spraying lacquer over the brass dulled it some what, and deminished the shine. The second draw back was that over time it darkened, and was a pain in the butt to strip and re-polish. A fellow artist showed me a new product that when sprayed over black it looked just like real chrome, but when he sprayed automotive clear over it, it also dulled the chrome and took away the shine. If you can find a way to clear over just the artwork that is going on the black you can avoid this problem. The difficulty as I see it is feathering the clear without getting it on the nichel or silver. Also my understand of the chrome platting process is that it has to be done on bare metal, and can not be done over paint. As I mentioned there is a new product that when sprayed over a black base does in fact look like real chrome. This new paint might be a better option for your customer rather than actual nicheal or silver. Let me know and I will get the name of the product. I hope this is helpful
