Ok guys I've gotten a ton of responses on getting a lettering how to going. Well it's here so take your time and read the instructions very carefully. I'm using Badger Omni 3000's, Spectra-Tex paint, and a Terry Hill silent compressor from Coast Airbrush. Any textile paint would be your best bet for practicing. Ok, lets start with some basic rules that you have to memorize and take in as truth, to get to where you need to be with your lettering. 1.You will not be able to airbrush script unless you have learned the fundamentals of a good script alphabet. You do this by going back to square 1, 2nd grade script lettering. If you don't have this basic information in your head. The script will not come out of the airbrush no matter how much control you have, that is unless you get the information in your brain. So get a good script alphabet memorized. 2.In order to start airbrushing your airbrush equipment must be spraying properly. If your airbrush is spitting or not atomizing effectively this will hinder the learning process. 3.You also can start practicing your lettering by using my alphabet or downloading a basic cursive alphabet online. And you practice by getting the alphabet in your brain either by drawing the alphabet over and over with pencil or practicing with airbrush.I prefer both ways practice with airbrush at home and then while at work practice on paper. 4.In order to make you lettering look crisp you must be atleast 3 millimeters away from surface for 2 inch size names, and for bigger names like 5" or more like halh inch to 2 inches away from surface. 5.The closer you are to the surface the smaller and crisper your lines. The further you are away from the surface the softer and broader the lines are going to be. 6.You must learn to take your practice exercise extremely slow, well calculated, and meticulous. When practicing you need to really sloooooow down your rythm ,DO NOT WORRY AT ALL ABOUT SPEED,this will hinder you being able to control every loop and turn of the line your making..If you take your lines slow, you can be in full control of them.Do not let speed dictate your style, but let yourself have total control of every loop, twist, and turn by taking your ryhtm nice and graceful . 7.Let speed come naturally........do this by starting off with super slow controlled trigger and airbrush movements. 8.Expect to be frustrated especially since not only are some of you learning to control the airbrush but some of you are learning proper penmanship. That in itself can be a very frustrating and a hindrance against the learning process. So by coming to understand this you can be better suited to handle the frustration. 9.Understand the truth in this exercise, some are learning control and penmanship and some are learning either or. 10.Open your mind to thinking deeper and taking things much more easier and slower, that way the information and practicing is being absorbed in your brain and your time is being maximized by perfect practice sessions. 11.Perfect practice leads to perfect results.Do this by using the rules as the guides to lead you through this venture. 12.Rushing only will slow down your progression and will almost be wasted practice time.Think of this practice as your on a highway trying to read the information on the next sign, ask yourself do you want to be zooming down the highway at 100mph to get the information in your head or do you want to be going 25mph to get the info. This can be applied to the principle of perfect practice as mentioned above.By going sloe paces you absorb more control and information. 13.For good practicing results practice on any cloth material. You an use, paper towels bed sheets, old shirts and even news print. My choice practice material is bed sheets you have plent of room and they can be found cheep at thrift stores. 14.Ok guys your ready to go send me the emails of your first practice pieces as well as your 1 months progress.I want to see how well these exercises are doing for you. Lesson.1 In order to get good cursive coming out of the airbrush you must have control so first practice doing these e's and m's.Your goal is to make these letters as straight and proportioned to one another as possible.they also must be equally angled or equally italic, also even spaced. The height and the thickness of your lines must be consistent all the way through. This exercise will give you the consistent control you need to practice. Once you've got the hang of lesson 1 start airbrushing your alphabet by again keeping your lines equally thick nice and crisp and guided by the principles in lesson1.Do this atleast 100 times to get the alphabet in your head and memorized you can also practice on paper when your not airbrushing. Lesson 2.Building up your script Thickening up the down stroke.Ok how we turn our lettering into to calligraphic look is by every time we go downward on a stroke we go back over it and thicken it up by double the size of the line as shown in the reference I posted. You wan to do this exercise by getting your lesson 1 e's and m's and go over each down stroke.Once you've got the practice in on the e's and m's start thickening up all the alphabets you've also done in excercise 1.This will build control precision and give you practice on how a good cursive name should look. Lesson3. Do not jump into this lesson till you have mastered the above lessons. Now this is where you can get the biggest bang for your buck so to say.Single stroke script, we do this by knocking it out in one whack rarely having to go back over your lines again. Now this technique will give you a little more over sprayed look but once you master it you'll be happy with the finished look result in one pass. You do this again by going really super slooooooow and controlled and repeat to yourself up thinnnn down thiiiiiick up thiiiiiin down thiiiiiiiick over and over again practice them e's and m's until you get the hang of it.Then once you got it down then move on to the alphabet and then onto full names. In order to master this you must paint hundreds and hundreds of names over and over again.Watch you loops being formed by your control and take it easy and slow. Lesson 5.Stylizing your script There's a ton of great reference material online containing tattoo scripts, sign painters scripts, and classical scripts.Whatever you do take your time devote the attention and study study study get the scrolls in your head by practicing slow and meticulously .Once you've practiced them long enough your control will meet up with speed and then they both will meet up with style. This is where you must get creative and challenge yourself ti create your own style you choose to pursue have fun, stay patient, and make it happen! Good Luck I hope this was a great help to all!
