Hello,

I have only really painted a small amount with AA last summer on my motorcycle and i got another bike that i want to use uros on.  I plan on buying some of the kustom shops new line since they come in small bottles so i can practice and see what color i like.

anyway i have a couple questions about how to paint the base coat with my mini spray gun.  Can basecoats get orange peel like clear can?  if it happens, can i just lightly sand it out (i will be using a pearl paint color)?  i plan on practicing a fair amount before i spray them but i just wanted to know some of the basic first.  I really had a hard time clearing over some of the AA colors because t was so grainy and i couldnt get the clear to flow over it and ended up with alot of sanding to do at the end.

AA has ro be grainy, thats what the clear needs to stick to.  you wont hardly notice any orange peel with euros, just wipe between each layer with a tack rag to get any light overspray, and WEAR A RESPERATOR!

if your using a quality gun properly regulated....no orange peel from urethanes... however kanies do act like clear since they are just tinted inner coat in most situations...    buy yourself a diaphram in-line regulator...not the $7 home depot job...the $50 auto paint supplier one... you would be amazed at the pressure difference from regulator to gun when using say a 25' hose...your wall mount may say 25 but at the gun might only be 15.... Your higher end guns like SATA are really pressure sensitive in order to achieve the best results... so if your getting lots of orange peal even with your clear...check your gun setup... orange peel is always gonna be there when your dumpin flow clear on something but...it can be minimized...

Orange peel is usualy a result of to thick paint or to thick paint build up.I case of using a small touchup gun or mini gun it can also be a matter of not laying enough paint down in short enough time so paint can not flow enough.Thin the paint corectly and do not put to many layers down, make sure the gun is cappable of laying down enough volume of paint acording to the size of the part.With uro basecoats it's usualy enough to spray one light mist coat and two slightly heavyer crosswise layers to cover. base is not suppose to be sandet,it can be done but its usualy very fradgile and you will sand tru very easy. it aint no problem if the base coat is a little grainy,this should be taken care of by the clear coat.

It can also be handy to make the primer color match the basecoat color as close as possible or within the same gradation. white primer under light colors, grey primer for blue, green, black, metalics,....(cold colors) beige primer under red,yellow,orange,also for metalics....(warm colors) if the part is red and has to become white its best to spray black or dark grey primer as the red will bleed tru white otherwise. Pearls are usualy an effect that go's on top of another base color and not as a base on its own (semi transparent).if you want to have blue pearl you may have to paint the part metalic blue first or uni color blue and lay an extra coat of bleu pearl over that to get the pearl bleu effect and the real pearl effect will show after the final clearcoat is aplyed. (3 layer color build up, as they'r also called)
there are alot of fun things you can do with pearls and other effect paints and aditives as flakes,shimrin pearls,candy's,..... I like to experiment with them myself alot,even if it can become an expensive habbit, most of these products aren't cheap. they just kick *ss and can bring your work to the next level. LOL

Uros... Basecoats (two stage) and catalyzed topcoats, clear or otherwise. Stick with basecoats fer yer art. Don't intermix with any other bases till you know yer stuff. Use the reducer for the temps yool spray at. Use lacquer thinner fer cleanups. A good midrange degreaser for preps. Watch tacky-rags cuz they kin rub off. Yer mini-gun will be fine if it handles AA. Do NOT trust chemical bonds to yer primers till you know yer stuff... Depind on scratch. Keep yer basecoat layers wet but don't overdoo... Just enuff to gloss. Don't trust yer fingers to tell when you kin mask... Allow more time than you think it'll need. Use masking that solvints won't go thru easily... No newspaper crap. Yer interin a new, brite world, kid! Have fun.

Airhead gives excellent advice. All I would add is read your P sheets and stay within your time windows.make sure you have adequate ventilation. Also Kustom Shop is not the only place that sells small quantities. Check out Coast Airbrush for HOK paint and Inate.com for X-otic paint in small quantities.

thanks for all the info.  i'm going to order some different colors and start practicing.  i will only be using a single color, no candies or anything since those are harder to do.  i get the frame back this weekend so i still have a long way to go till i actually paint it but i will paint everything myself, tins, frame etc. so i better get practicing.

Also... maybe find a PPG dealer that'll mix you small volumes... mine does it down to 4oz which yields 8-10 oz of reduced color.  PPG has some fancy colors,  but a whole lot of 'em are in the $1-$2 per oz range (unreduced)... and don't forget to practice your color theory... B-W-Y-R-B and you've got a practical library.

Here is something that I don't think was mentioned;
My local auto paint store has clear coat for $20.00 qt., but no matter how good your gun, and no matter how you spray, your gonna get plenty of orange peal.
The same store sell a dupont clear coat for about $55.00 qt. , With a halfway decent gun it will spray on like glass. Unless you get something in the clearcoat it will look like it's been buffed and polished.
Don't go cheap on the clear coat.

Not true, Crissie... The painter rools. I use those cheepies alla time fer crap stuff. Useful to have around. They don't have high-flow characteristics so ya hafta use yer mind! A lil more thinner, higher temp thinner, etc. Also allow more time between coats. Newbies are better off not spindin high bucks till they need to but they do need to try the good stuff.

i have another question.  right now i have an astra mini with the .08 tip.  i read the post from yeserday about that i might have not been putting down enough paint, which i think is actually what happened.  Is a 1.0 or 1.2 better for clearing than the .08?
